Our Summer 2020 program is full. We will be accepting applications for fall 2020 Saturday Morning tutoring in late August.
CLaRI’s summer program “One-to-one Reading and Writing Sessions” offers individualized, virtual tutoring to children entering Kindergarten through 12 grade. Certified literacy specialists, as well as UB literacy specialist graduate students, provide individualized, virtual literacy instruction using best practices to tailor instruction to meet each child’s unique literacy and learning needs. We believe that all children can learn to read.
Children in regular education and special education classes working below grade level, on grade level or above grade level are welcome to attend summer tutoring.
Based on parent and teacher information, CLaRI provides instruction in one or all of the following areas: comprehension, vocabulary development, fluency, spelling (phonological awareness, phonics, & conventional spelling) and writing.
Sessions are 55 minutes in length, with 5 minutes of parent debriefing at the end of each session for a total of 60 minutes. We offer morning, afternoon, evening, and Saturday morning sessions at various times during the week. The program runs for five weeks, from Monday, July 6 to Saturday, Aug. 8, 2020. Parents and clinicians will determine dates/times of tutoring each week that is convenient for both the parent and clincian.
Sessions will be offered virtually, via the web-based platform: Zoom. Parents will need to have access to a computer with an internet connection and a video camera for each tutoring session. The parent is expected to sit with or near the child during the entire tutoring session to help the child with certain tasks, such as turning book pages, when needed. CLaRI will provide the Zoom meeting link. Parents will log in to Zoom on the set day/time for each of the 5 weeks of tutoring.
CLaRI does not provide assistance with homework. We work to develop children's overall literacy abilities with individualized literacy instruciton.
The last five minutes of every tutoring session is reserved for clinicians to speak to parents about the instruction provided during that lesson, homework (if desired), and their child’s literacy progress. Before each tutoring session, parents will receive a brief summary sheet that states: what instruction will occur during the session, so the parent can follow along as the clinician and parent work. At the end of tutoring, the clinician will review your child's literacy progress and explain homework, if requested.
If you will be on vacation during one of the five weeks of our summer program, CLaRI will be happy to accommodate this and schedule one make-up session. We cannot accommodate more than one week’s absence.
