I am an assistant professor with the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York I received Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
for my work on Saving Fuel for Heavy-Duty Vehicles Using Connectivity and Automation.
My advisor is Prof. Gabor Orosz. Before joining UB, I worked at industry developing planning and control algorithm for autonomous trucks. With experiences in both academia and industry, I study fundamental questions with huge application impact.

Research Interest

My research focuses on AI-enabled Data-driven safe and efficient control.
My group combines rigorous model based method (e.g. nonlinear control, optimal control) with data-driven approach to achieve safe and efficient control for robotics systems.
One major application is to achieve safe and efficient mobility with connected and automated vehicles.

To Perspective Students

I am looking for highly motivated students with strong dynamics and control backgrounds with programming experiences in python and MATLAB. Two PhD positions are available immediately in the following directions.

  • Certification for Trustworthy AI Algorithms

  • Data-driven energy-efficient control for connected and automated vehicles in interactive traffic conditions

Please send your detailed CV, representative publications or writing samples (if any), transcripts, and a brief statement of interest to Prof. He: chaozheh@buffalo.edu. I will contact you if there is a good match.
Please note that the PhD program with UB MAE department is rolling based and the perspective student may apply and be admitted throughout the year.
