Faculty Profile

Marcella Baiz

Assistant Professor, Department of Biological Sciences

Marcella Baiz.

What questions are you trying to answer with your research?

What mechanisms drive the evolution of new species? How do populations adapt to their environment? How do symbiotic interactions shape evolutionary processes?

What drew you to your field of study?

I have always been fascinated by biodiversity. I knew I wanted to do research when I took Ornithology (the biology of birds) during my undergraduate studies. I learned that there are over 10,000 different bird species, with so many interesting and unique behaviors and plumage colors. I wanted to learn how ecology and evolution could explain this amazing diversity.

What do you like to do to relax?

My favorite hobbies are knitting and reading.
