UB's planned growth good for region

"Good research universities are good business" for their surrounding communities, and UB, with its plan to grow by 40 percent in the next 13 years, is no exception, President John B. Simpson told members of the Western New York legislative delegation at a meeting to discuss state support of UB programs. » Full Story

Finalists named in CAS dean search. The interim dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and a former chair of the UB Department of English have emerged as two of the four finalists in the search for a new dean of the college.

Community input sought on athletics. A committee studying the future of UB's intercollegiate athletics programs has scheduled two meetings to obtain input from the community.

Searching for truth from the ground up. UB historian Hal Langfur says his previous career as a journalist in Brazil has shaped the way in which he views the country's past.

"Poetics Plus." "Poetics Plus," the poetry series presented by the Poetics Program in the Department of English, is back this semester with another lineup of notable poets.

Change in brain linked with addiction. A researcher at UB's Research Institute on Addictions has found a change in the brain that occurs after drug use and that may contribute to drug addiction.

Postdocs vital to research effort. While the more than 35,000 postdoctoral associates working in U.S. universities and other research institutions may be the unsung heroes of science in the U.S., they are not working in obscurity.

Exhibit showcases Media Study faculty. An exhibition on view at the Center for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany, celebrates the work of eight pioneering media artists, members of the UB faculty who queried the relationship between media and constructions of reality.

Shibley named to canal commission. UB faculty member Robert Shibley has been appointed by Dirk Kempthorne, U.S. secretary of interior, to serve a three-year term on the Federal Commission on the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.

FSEC discusses final exams week. Members of the Faculty Senate Executive Committee yesterday were briefed on how the Provost's Office is updating the way in which final exams are scheduled.
