President John B. Simpson told members of the voting faculty on Tuesday that he rejected an easier path of merely managing "an already very accomplished" UB when he took office in 2004 in favor of pushing for "an agenda of change." » Full Story

Review finds problems in HR

Inefficiency and inconsistency are just two of the problems the Office of Human Resource Services has found in a comprehensive review of campus HR processes and procedures undertaken as part of the UB 2020 strategic planning process. » Full Story

"Scaling up" math curriculum. Two faculty members in the Graduate School of Education have received a five-year, $6 million grant to "scale up" the model for implementing their research-based pre-kindergarten mathematics curriculum.

Alito not an "ideologue." UB law professor Lee Albert calls Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito "fair-minded," and says his former student is not an ideologue.

Filmmakers to convene. Experimental filmmakers from several nations will travel to Buffalo this weekend to explore the nature of the cinematic image in relation to time.

Studying pollutant-disease link. New UB faculty member Matthew Bonner studies why some people are more vulnerable than others to cancer-causing pollutants.

Working for a safer Heights. UB's Regional Community Policing Center is working with police and residents in an effort to reduce crime, increase safety and improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods surrounding the South Campus.

Gift supports new music center. A gift from a UB alumnus will help establish a Signature Center of Excellence in 21st Century Music at the university.

"Darwin" defends evolution. Charles Darwin made a special appearance at a conference at UB last week to defend his theory of evolution against creationism and intelligent design.

Ground broken for library storage. Crews have broken ground for a new storage facility to house the growing collections of the University Libraries.

Principal investigators honored. UB's top 100 principal investigators were honored at a reception on Oct. 27 hosted by President John B. Simpson and Provost Satish K. Tripathi.
