Teens' labels key to alcohol, drug use

The labels that teenagers use to describe themselves and their peers provide an insight into their drug and alcohol use, according to a study at UB's Research Institute on Addictions. » Full Story

Homeland security focus of conference. Researchers from throughout the SUNY system are gathering today to discuss emerging and ongoing research in homeland security at a conference being co-organized by UB.

Guarneri quartet to perform. The Guarneri String Quartet will join the golden anniversary celebration of the Slee Beethoven String Quartet Cycle on Oct. 28 and Oct 30 by presenting the third and fourth concerts in this unique program.

EngiNet links student in Iraq to UB. Graduate student Jennifer LaBuda was able to continue her UB studies while deployed to Iraq, thanks to EngiNet, an online distance-learning program offered by the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

Offering comfort to storm survivors. Social Work dean Nancy Smyth was in the right place at the right time to help survivors of Hurricane Katrina.

"Smart concrete" could improve levees. A technology developed by a UB faculty member could help strengthen levees and monitor their reliability.

Raising cosmic questions. The desire to assign cosmic significance to the arrival of hurricanes Katrina and Rita is an example of humankind's ages-old need to find reason within chaos, according to UB anthropologist Phillips Stevens Jr.

Bronze book to be installed in Capen. The 2,000-pound "operable" bronze book about Buffalo designed and made by UB faculty, staff and students soon will be installed on the ground floor of Capen Hall, where it will be exhibited through the end of the year.

Geomorphology symposium to be held. Effective mitigation of the effects of extreme natural phenomena through integrated environmental management that includes the perspectives of geomorphologists and ecosystem scientists will be the focus of an interdisciplinary symposium to be held next weekend at UB.

Events set for Homecoming. The UB Alumni Association will host a variety of activities during Homecoming Week 2005, to be held Wednesday through Oct. 9.
