Quake center changes name, focus

To better reflect its mission of developing solutions to improve resilience against extreme events of all sorts, the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research headquartered at UB is shortening its name to MCEER. » Full Story

Schoenle named police chief. Gerald Schoenle, assistant chief of police for the City of Arlington, Texas, and a 20-year member of the Buffalo Police Department, has been named chief of university police, effective July 31.

Reversing "hibernating" heart. Heart researchers at UB are working to develop new strategies to reverse a heart dysfunction called "hibernating myocardium" that can cause disabling heart failure and sudden death.

Going strong at age 90. Although he officially retired in 1985, Richard Schmidt, professor emeritus in the Department of Biostatistics, still comes into his office on the South Campus twice a week.

Diabetes research. Researchers at UB are beginning two new studies as part of an international effort to prevent type 1 diabetes.
