IT committee offers strategies

A panel charged with reviewing the university's IT functions as part of the UB 2020 academic planning process has recommended four strategies encompassing 10 initiatives and 56 specific projects. » Full Story

Ehrlich named Distinguished Professor. UB faculty member Isaac Ehrlich has been named a SUNY Distinguished Professor by the SUNY Board of Trustees.

Learning goals questioned. A UB researcher and his colleague at the Association of American Colleges and Universities maintain that top U.S. colleges and universities cannot assess achievement because they haven't made clear what they expect undergraduates to learn.

Sondheim link to UB production. Student performers in the UB production of "Merrily We Roll Along" are geting a rare chance to learn from two people who have worked with the musical's creator, composer and lyricist.

Manipulating behavior. Researchers at UB and the University of Pennsylvania were the first to demonstrate that two intracellular events, both stimulated by the same cell receptor, can provoke different behaviors in mammals.

Exhibitions to open today. Opening receptions for "Niagara Falls," a site-specific installation by Adam Cvijanovic, and "Scene from 'Olympus Manger'" by Kelly Kaczynski will be held today in the UB Art Gallery in the Center for the Arts.

PDT kills drug-resistant bacteria. Photodynamic therapy may be an effective treatment for fungal infections and certain bacterial infections of the oral cavity, including some that are resistant to antibiotics, research from the School of Dental Medicine has shown.

Chinese university to honor Prasad. UB faculty member Paras Prasad will receive an honorary professorship from Zhejiang University—an honor that usually goes to Nobel laureates.

Metabolites found in wastewater. Chemists at UB have for the first time identified at wastewater treatment plants the metabolites of two antibiotics and a medical imaging agent.

MyUB update. The Faculty Senate Executive Committee yesterday learned that about half of all faculty members are active users of the MyUB portal.

Predicting oral bone loss. Researchers at UB have identified two components of saliva that may serve as the basis for novel tests to determine the risk for future loss of the bone that holds teeth in place.

Students explore science. Hundreds of high school students descended upon UB during spring break last week to learn about topics ranging from flesh-invading flies to cryogenics.
