UB to study facial, jaw pain

The School of Dental Medicine has received $3.3 million to participate in the first large-scale, prospective clinical study of risk factors that contribute to the development of temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders. » Full Story

Simpson reasserts pledge for access. President John B. Simpson reasserted his commitment to improving access to public education in Buffalo, statewide and beyond during an address on Jan. 19 in the Buffalo Niagara Marriott.

Designing next-generation products. A new program at UB's Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Technology Transfer is helping major corporations produce next-generation consumer products that are "more usable and accessible to all," including persons with disabilities and the elderly.

Hidden dental talents to be displayed. UB dental students, faculty and staff will show off skills that have nothing to do with teeth during the school's 10th annual talent show tomorrow night.

IRDF awards announced. Eight faculty research projects have received a total of $253,582 in grants during the first round of funding from the UB 2020 Interdisciplinary Research Development Fund.

Music schedules February concerts. A Feb. 17 performance by world-renowned Canadian flutist and composer Robert Aitken will be among the highlights of the concert schedule to be presented by the Department of Music during February.

Boosting stem cells in lab. UB researcher Emmanuel (Manolis) Tzanakakis is working to boost the numbers of stem cells produced in the laboratory, expanding the pool of cells that eventually can be differentiated into insulin-producing cells for diabetes patients who can't produce their own insulin.

Book beckons Scottish curator. During a quiet week earlier this month, a museum curator traveled from Scotland to look at one item in UB's Rare Books Collection.

Spintronics focus of research. Igor Zutic, a new faculty member in the Department of Physics, focuses his research in the emerging field of "spintronics," which he says could someday revolutionize technology with smaller, faster, more efficient devices.

Joyce with Gusto. "James Joyce with Gusto," an evening of performances, readings, chat, music and song celebrating Joyce's work, will take place Feb. 3 in the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

Use of GRE for assessment urged. A group of future UB undergraduates would get the chance to take the Graduate Record Examination for free, according to an assessment proposal discussed during the Faculty Senate Executive Committee meeting yesterday.
