UB strong in "extreme events"

Two faculty members heading planning efforts for the "extreme events" strategic strength told the UB Council on Monday that while other institutions have jumped on the bandwagon of extreme events research since 9/11, UB has been a leader in the field for many years. » Full Story

Courses to touch on Tibetan Buddhism

As part of a slate of activities planned around the upcoming visit to UB of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, a comprehensive list is being compiled of Spring and Fall 2006 classes that will touch on Tibetan Buddhism and related topics. » Full Story

Conserving energy. With energy costs soaring, UB, for the second time in its history, is embarking on a major, campus-wide, comprehensive energy-conservation project.

Award winner. UB faculty member Colin Drury's career of broad contributions to the fields of aviation safety and human factors has been recognized with two prestigious national honors.

Joint appointment offers opportunities. New faculty member Sarah Bay-Cheng says her joint appointment in theatre and dance and media study offers a range of possibilities.

New level for bioinformatics project. An effort to introduce local high school students to the emerging field of bioinformatics is moving to the next level with a workshop designed to help high school teachers incorporate the topic into their own curriculums.

"Heads-up" hockey advocated. Unintentional collisions and falling into the boards cause more injuries in young hockey players than the practice of body checking, UB researchers have found.

New way to assess SCD. A new study being conducted at UB is expected to make it easier for clinicians to predict those at high risk of experiencing sudden cardiac death.

Fatty liver possible risk for hypertension. A UB study has found that the accumulation of fat in the liver, or "fatty liver," resulting from accumulation of central body fat may represent an important underlying mechanism for the association between liver enzymes and hypertension.

Tiny strings tackle big questions. Physicist Brian Greene speculates string theory can answer the big questions of the universe, and gave a UB audience a lesson in the history and future of the field.

Departments should continue hiring. UB departments seeking to hire new faculty members may do so without waiting until the UB 2020 planning process is complete to see if those positions fit into the new plans, the Faculty Senate Executive Committee was told yesterday.
