Simpson gets nod as UB president

John Barclay Simpson, SUNY Chancellor Robert L. King's recommended candidate to replace William R. Greiner as UB's president, was introduced on Friday to the UB community and immediately promised to push an agenda that left no doubt that UB "is the premier public research university in the Northeast." » Full Story

UB launches high-speed data line

The university this fall will lay approximately 14 miles of fiber-optic cable to enhance critical, high-speed data links between its two campuses and with affiliated research institutions. » Full Story

Meet John Barclay Simpson. The Reporter and other members of the campus media sat down last week with the man who is expected to be named UB's 14th president. He talked about, among other things, his vision for UB, his passion for public higher education, his children and his cat, Max.

Capaldi to becond second in command at SUNY. Provost Elizabeth D. Capaldi is slated to become the second-ranking administrator in SUNY, pending approval by the Board of Trustees at a meeting in December.

Pot linked to impaired male fertility. Men who smoke marijuana frequently have significantly less seminal fluid, a lower total sperm count and their sperm behave abnormally, all of which may affect fertility adversely, a new UB study has shown.

Integrating data to tackle diseases. Linking computer scientists with life scientists to develop computational tools that will try to uncover the causes of complex diseases like cancer, multiple sclerosis and coronary artery disease is the goal of UB researchers working under two federal grants totaling $2.8 million.

Leading the way for the virtual classroom. The work of UB's Distance Learning and Videoconferencing Operations is helping to bring the university's classrooms to a global audience.

Design competition semi-finalist. UB architect Mehrdad Hadighi is one of 10 semi-finalists in the design competition for a 9/11 memorial to be constructed in Hoboken, N.J., across the Hudson River from the site of the World Trade Center.

Solving a fiberglass riddle. UB surface scientists have discovered why one fiberglass, which should be pathogenic, isn't.

Studio targets University Heights. The School of Architecture and Planning and a consortium of commercial and community leaders are working to identify, analyze and ultimately help resolve issues of concern to the University Heights neighborhood.

Libraries to lease storage space. Desperate for space to store its burgeoning collection of materials, the University Libraries will lease space in a building to be constructed off campus by Hart Hotels Inc.
