Sheffer to step down.

John B. Sheffer, II, founder and executive director of UB's Institute for Local Governance and Regional Growth, announced yesterday that he will retire from the leadership role at the institute on Sept. 1. » Full Story

Grant to develop smart sensor system. Johnson & Johnson has committed $180,000 to UB to develop a biologically inspired smart sensor system that would have potential applications in medical and industrial situations, as well as homeland security.

Physicist receives CAREER award. Andrea Markelz has received a prestigious National Science Foundation award to develop a technique for measuring the elasticity of biomolecules, such as proteins, using ultrafast optical methods.

"Adventures in Ideas." The College of Arts and Sciences will offer a series of weekend seminars this summer featuring lectures and informal discussions on the Western New York works of Frank Lloyd Wright and the history of UB.

Drinking patterns key in liver disease. UB researchers have found that a person's pattern of alcohol consumption is key in the development of liver disease.
