Sample to receive Norton Medal

Former UB President Steven B. Sample will receive the Chancellor Charles P. Norton Medal, UB's highest award, during the university's 158th general commencement ceremony, to be held at 10 a.m. May 9 in Alumni Arena, North Campus. » Full Story

Furthering assistive technology. The Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Technology Transfer at UB has received a $4.75 million federal grant to continue its pioneering work in the field of assistive devices and technology.

Election turns on Iraq, economy. Veteran newsman and political analyst Tim Russert told a UB audience last night that the outcome of the presidential election will be determined by Americans' views of the economy and the war in Iraq.

Smith receives $1.1 million grant. UB philosopher Barry Smith has received another major grant to support his work in biomedical ontology.

Summer initiative back with more offerings. The successful debut last year of "UB This Summer" means the series of workshops, lectures, summer camps and programs will be back for a second run with some new additions.

Final word on estrogen. Full results of the clinical trial of estrogen supplementation for postmenopausal women who have had a hysterectomy show there is no overall health benefit to taking the hormone.

Just SWAP it. UB SWAP offers university employees a chance to reuse, recycle and redistribute office supplies and equipment.

Branching out overseas. Faced with possible declines in international-student enrollments due to strict post-9/11 student-visa regulations, UB is among several U.S. institutions reaching out to international students by establishing new programs and campuses on international soil.

Back to basics. UB paleontologists are working on a computational method to morph deformed fossils back to their original shapes.

LiTgloss expands. The successful text-translation Web site has increased its offerings to include Swahili, Hindi, Sanskrit and the language of the Aztecs.

Navigating the IT landscape. The Educational Technology Center is helping faculty to bring technology to their curricular and research activities.
