Lifetime achievement. UB architect Robert Shibley has received the James Haecker Distinguished Leadership Award, one of the most prestigious awards in his field.

Saving lives. The university's acquisition of 32 defibrillators has increased the chances of survival of persons suffering from cardiac arrest while on campus.

"Self-Googling" urged. The practice of "self-Googling," or searching for your own name on the Google search engine, may seem vain, but a UB communication professor recommends it as a shrewd form of "personal brand management" in the digital age.

The way of the horn. Music department faculty member Jon Nelson combines teaching with a successful performing career that features a repertoire ranging from new music to Frank Zappa.

Treating gum disease in smokers. UB researchers have shown that giving smokers a supplement containing vitamins C and E and grape seed extract improved their response to treatment for gum disease, shown by better gum attachment and improved oral health in general.

Rhino reigned supreme. Lions may be king of the jungle, but the modern animal that has no predators in the wild, except for man, is the rhinoceros and that probably was the case as long as 9 million years ago, UB geologists have concluded.

Consider design, Carter urges. Speaking before the Faculty Senate on Tuesday, Brian Carter, dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, urged administrators to consider making small design improvements on campus.

"Brain exercises" improve cognitive functioning. Research conducted at UB's Research Institute on Addictions has found that cognitive rehabilitation exercises originally developed for head-injury patients improve the cognitive functioning of individuals in substance-abuse treatment.

Clues to early Earth. Investigations into lava lakes on the surface of Jupiter's moon Io may provide ideas of what Earth looked like as a newborn planet.

Gift to Pharmacy. Sankyo Pharma has given $100,000 to the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to support its teaching, training and research, as well as for equipment purchases.
