Jim Gorman and Rob Wright of Administrative Computing Services received The Sallie Mae Prestige Award for their presentation, "MyUB: Your personal portal to the UB Web," at WebDevShare99, held last month at Indiana University. WebDevShare99 is the premier conference for managers and professionals in higher education focusing on development and delivery of effective Web-based administrative systems. MyUB, a personalized Web site linking freshmen to important information, including academic and student services, is part of UB's Access99 initiative.
The Office of Admissions received five awards of excellence at the 29th annual conference of the State University of New York College Admissions Personnel (SUNYCAP). They are Regina Toomey, assistant vice provost for undergraduate education and director of admissions, and Carmela Thompson, associate director of admissions, for excellence in the design and implementation of an on-campus program to communicate the importance of all members of the campus community in the enrollment and retention of students, for Recruit UB and Marketing UB 101; David Emhof, senior admissions advisor, for excellence and innovation in the design and implementation of an on-campus open house or comparable program, for Preview Day 1999; Mark Petrie, associate director of admissions, and Timothy Tryjankowski, senior admissions advisor, for outstanding contribution to the design and improvement of office operations and procedures, for reengineering and operation of reception area; Patricia Pollock, communications specialist, and Andrew Morris, telecounseling supervisor, for excellence in the design and/or creation of an electronic admissions marketing piece, for UB Explorer and email marketing, and Mary Weatherston, assistant director of admissions, who received the New Professional award recognizing outstanding performance and achievement among new SUNY professionals.
Rajat Chakraborti, a doctoral student in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, received the 1999 International Association for Great Lakes Research/Hydrolab Best Presented Paper Award at the association's annual conference. The paper was titled "Particle Aggregate Characterization Using Image Processing Technique."
Sargur N. Srihari, distinguished professor in the Department of Computer Science and the founder and director of the Center of Excellence for Document Analysis and Recognition (CEDAR), has been given the title of distinguished alumnus by the faculty of the College of Engineering at Ohio State University.
William J. Rapaport, associate professor of computer science and engineering, adjunct professor of philosophy and a member of the Center for Cognitive Science, has two current publications. They are "Cognition and Fiction: An Introduction" in "Understanding Language: Computational Models of Reading" (MIT Press) with Stuart C. Shapiro, professor of computer science and engineering, and "Implementation is Semantic Interpretation" in The Monist. The issue of The Monist is devoted to the philosophy of computer science.
