Baseball

LeMoyne 9, UB 3; LeMoyne 10, UB 1
Albany 7, UB 5; Albany 9, UB 8

The Bulls were swept in a pair of doubleheaders this past week, losing to LeMoyne and Albany.

UB had an early 2-1 lead in the first game against LeMoyne on April 13, but the Dolphins came back and scored six runs in two innings to win 9-3.

In the second game, the Dolphins' pitching limited the Bulls' hitters to just two hits and just one run in the game. UB gave up eight runs in the first three innings and never led, losing by a 10-1 final.

Over the weekend, the Bulls hosted Albany for a doubleheader that was played Saturday at Frontier Field in Rochester, where the Bulls were once again swept. In the first game, the Great Danes jumped on UB early, hitting two, two-run homers in the first inning and jumping out to a 6-0 lead after two. UB fought back and scored five runs in the sixth, but fell short as Albany took the first game, 7-5.

In the second game, UB jumped out to an early leadÑ7-2Ñafter three innings. But Albany came back, scoring two runs in the fourth and sixth, and one in the seventh to force extra innings. The Danes added two in the top of the eighth, and the Bulls' rally in the bottom half of the inning fell short, as they lost the nightcap, 9-8.




Softball

Syracuse 9, UB 0; UB 2, Syracuse 1
Niagara 8, UB 0; Niagara 11, UB 0.

The long drought ended for the Bulls as UB posted a 2-1 win at Syracuse on Friday in the second game of a doubleheader to break a 19-game losing streak.

Freshman Jessica York went the distance, allowing just three hits and one run to claim the victory. UB picked up just two hits off Syracuse starter Tara DiMaggio, but one was a home run by junior catcher Kim Lawrence that gave the Bulls a 2-0 edge after two innings.

York's only blemish was a solo homer by Jackie Herman in the fourth inning.

The Bulls dropped the opener of the doubleheader, 9-0. It had originally been scheduled for April 12 but moved to Friday due to the weather.

The Bulls were shutout in both games of Saturday's doubleheader against Niagara, 8-0 and 11-0, in the first games in the new UB Softball Stadium.




Tennis

Women

Akron 7, UB 0

The Bulls dropped a Mid-American Conference match Saturday at Akron, 7-0. The Bulls are now 5-13 overall and 0-7 in the MAC. Fifth singles player Anne Schule lost a three-set match to Marti Conner, winning the first set, 6-3, but dropping the next two, 7-5, 6-2. First singles player Michelle Mercer was defeated by Anniken Andersen, 6-4, 6-1. In the doubles competition, the number-one team of Nicole Sargent and Karen Maynard lost a heartbreaking 9-8 decision to Anniken Andersen and Arianna Rojas-Serpa. The pro-set match went to a 17th game tie-breaker, won by the Zips, 7-4.




Athletes of
the Week
Steve Esler of the men's track-and-field team won the high jump at the Albany Invitational. Esler's jump of 6« 9ý was a personal best and set a UB school record, breaking his previous school-best mark of 6« 8-3/4ý.

Jessica York pitched a complete-game three-hitter to lead the women's softball team to a 2-1 victory over Syracuse, breaking the Bulls' 19-game losing skid. The freshman went seven innings, walking a pair and allowing just one run, a homer by Jackie Hermann. She leads the team with a 4.83 earned run average.

Football

All-time receiving leader Drew Haddad became the third UB player drafted into the NFL when he was chosen by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of Sunday's NFL draft. Haddad follows Ed Ellis ('97, chosen in the fourth round by New England) as NFL draftees in head coach Craig Cirbus' tenure.

Haddad will have a former teammate to keep him company in Orchard Park. Fullback Josh Roth was signed as a free agent by the Bills. Roth is a three-year starter who led Buffalo in rushing the past two seasons.

In addition, four-year starter Joe Hattendorf was signed to a free-agent contract by the Cincinnati Bengals. Hattendorf allowed just one sack at left tackle in his final two seasons with the Bulls.




Track and Field

Men place first in Albany Invitational
Women place first in Albany Invitational

The men's and women's track and field teams both placed first at the Albany Invitational this past weekend. The men totaled 213 points to win over Albany, Colgate, Holy Cross and Binghamton, while the women scored 220 points for the win.

Two more UB records fell this past weekend as Adam Smith set a new mark and placed first in the shot put with a toss of 49« 2-1/2ý. Steve Esler won the high jump and set a new personal best and school record with a jump of 6« 9ý.


Crew

The women's varsity and novice crews had their best showing of the season as they rowed against Mercyhurst at Finley Lake, N.Y., this past weekend.

The highlight of the regatta was the novice eight race. Taking control of the race at 500 meters, UB pulled away, leading by eight seconds at 1,000 meters. The Bulls won the race by five lengths.

The varsity eight put in a strong performance over the 2000-meter course. Rowing even for much of the first 600 meters, the Mercyhurst crew began to take over the lead and pulled away in the last 1,000 meters to finish 13 seconds ahead of the second-place Bulls.

In the varsity-four race, Mercyhurst lead from the start and outrowed Buffalo to finish several lengths ahead.

In the novice-four race, the Bulls began to pull even midway through the race and both crews rowed even to the finish. Mercyhurst was awarded the victory by a mere nine-tenths of a second.
