An article entitled "What We Do Matters," authored by Tamar Jacobson, director of the UB Child Care Center, Inc., was published in the November edition of the Child Care Information Exchange. "Literacy with an Attitude," published by SUNY Press, is a new book by Patrick Finn, associate professor in the Department of Learning and Instruction in the Graduate School of Education. In the book, Finn addresses the resistance of working-class children to the kind of education they typically receive-education designed to make them useful workers and obedient citizens. He contrasts these traditional models with alternative methods for teaching powerful literacy in American working-class students.

H. Raghav Rao and Ram Ramesh, both associate professors of management information systems in the School of Management, have been named editors-in-chief of a new journal entitled Information Systems Frontiers: A Journal of Research and Innovation.

David M. Forgues, a candidate for a master's degree in psychology; Kaya Gerberich, a senior psychology major, and Priyank Shah, a senior majoring in political science, have received J. Scott Fleming Merit Awards for leadership and volunteer efforts that promote student involvement and enhance the student experience. The awards, named for a former executive director of the UB Office of Alumni Relations, were presented by the University Student Alumni Board, the student affiliate of the UB Alumni Association.

Lyle Ostrow, a student in the combined M.D./Ph.D. program, received a first prize for a poster presentation at the "ET-6: Sixth International Conference on Endothelins" held recently in Montreal. The poster is entitled "Stretch-induced Endothelin-1 Production by Astrocytes." A brief manuscript will be published early next year in the Journal of Cardiovascular Pharmacology as part of the "proceedings supplement" of the conference.

Gerald Goldhaber, associate professor of communication, received the 1999 Philanthropy Award from the National Society of Fund Raising Executives for his long-standing work with Shea's Performing Arts Center. Goldhaber serves as chair of the Shea's Board of Trustees.
