UB 47, Canisius 0

send this article to a friend The Bulls had a school-record 486 yards on the ground and posted their first shutout since 1991, dominating crosstown rival Canisius College, 47-0, before a crowd of 20,079 on Saturday night in UB Stadium.

The Bulls (4-3) also had a school-record 628 yards of total offense in the game. The last shutout that the Bulls had posted was a 49-0 win over Duquesne on Nov. 2, 1991. Fullback Josh Roth led the potent UB running game with a career-high 111 yards on 17 carries and scored his ninth touchdown of the season.

Sophomore tailback Theron Walker added a career-high 96 yards on 13 carries, while freshman David Schmidli had 12 carries for 74 yards as UB averaged an impressive 7.5 yards per carry.

The Bulls put the game away near the end of the first half as senior split end Kali Watkins, who had scored earlier on a 30-yard reverse, tallied his second rushing touchdown of the game on a 52-yard run off a fake punt with just :03 to go.

Junior flanker Drew Haddad had a pair of touchdown receptions, a 40-yarder from Chad Salisbury in the second quarter and a 17-yard strike in the third quarter.

The Bulls defense racked up a season-high four quarterback sacks in the game. Freshman linebacker Chris Shelly had eight tackles (five solos), while junior Josh Trexler had eight tackles and his first interception of the season. UB also got interceptions from sophomores Jeff Lawrence and Eric Pipkins.

The Golden Griffins drove to a first and goal at the two late in the fourth quarter, but were thwarted with two quarterback sacks and an interception by Pipkins on 4th-and-goal at the 17.

Volleyball

UB 0, Ohio 3
UB 1, Marshall 3

The women's volleyball team was unable to get a Mid-American Conference win at home this weekend, losing to both Ohio University (12-15, 11-15, 4-15) and Marshall (10-15, 12-15, 15-7, 9-15). Freshman outside hitter Keri Shiels had five kills, three service aces and 11 digs in the loss against Ohio. Shiels and Heather Barfuss combined for 31 kills and 17 digs to lead the UB effort against Marshall.

Soccer

Women's

UB 0, Central Michigan 3
UB 3, Western Michigan 2

The UB Bulls women's soccer team lost to host Central Michigan, 3-0, on Friday, and defeated host Western Michigan, 3-2, in an overtime thriller on Sunday.

Freshman goalkeeper Jaime Adams made eight stops in Friday's loss. In Sunday's MAC match against Western Michigan, sophomore forward Paula Listrani scored the winning goal in overtime on a penalty kick. Sophomores Heather Collins and Amy Woods scored the Bull's other two goals.

Men's

UB 1, Akron 5

The Bulls men's soccer team dropped its match against host Akron, 5-1, in Friday's Mid-American Conference outing. Junior fullback Eric Adhola scored the lone goal for UB. Buffalo was outshot 26-12 in the game.

Cross Country

The women's cross country team participated in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in New York City on Friday. The Bulls placed 5th (167 points) out of 26 squads. Sophomore Eileen Rose was UB's top finisher (18th, 19:19). Senior Laura Folckemer followed closely behind junior Marie Macander as they finished 27th and 26th, respectively. The men's squad accumulated 291 points for an 11th-place finish at the Central Collegiates at Western Michigan University on Friday. Sophomore Tony David placed 28th for the Bull's top finish.

Athlete of the Week

Fullback Josh Roth led the UB Bulls football squad to a record setting 628 yards of total offense in a 47-0 thrashing of visiting Canisius. Roth totalled a career-high 111 yards on 17 carries and found the end zone for the ninth time this season.

For the women's soccer team, sophomore Paula Listrani scored the winning goal (3-2) in overtime on a penalty kick for Coach Jean Tassy's team. The goal against Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan was her third gamewinner of the 1998 campaign.
