The Bulls captured their fourth straight victory on Sept. 27 as they defeated Cornell University in three games, 15-7, 15-10, 15-6 at Alumni Arena. Outside-hitter Amy Burda led the way for the Bulls with seven digs and 13 kills for a .318 hitting percentage. Also, outside-hitter Rebecca Meade and middle-hitter Nancy Rose made sound contributions with 10 and 13 kills, respectively.
The Bulls defeated St. Bonaventure earlier in the week in three straight games, 15-8, 15-3, 15-7 at Lockport High School. Three UB players, Somer Deschambault, Christina Gianino and Burda contributed four aces apiece.
Football
UB 27, West Chester 30
The Bulls couldn't shake the turnover bug in a disappointing 30-27 loss to West Chester University on Saturday before more than 6,500 fans at UB Stadium. Scott Keller's 38-yard field goal was wide left as time expired.
The Bulls had four turnovers in the game, including two second-half miscues inside the Golden Rams' 15-yard line, to fall to 2-3. Chad Salisbury completed 29-of-46 passes for 418 yards and three touchdowns for the Bulls.
Women's Soccer
UB 1, Dusquesne 0
UB 4, Howard 0
The Bulls traveled to Dusquesne Sept. 24 to grab their first victory of the season. Tricia DiQuattro scored the only goal of the game at 3:30 as the Bulls defeated Dusquesne, 1-0.
On Sept. 28, UB earned its second win at Howard by a score of 4-0. Linnaea DiNallo scored two goals for the Bulls, both in the second half, while Tara Donahue and Paula Listrani scored one goal apiece to move the Bulls to 2-5-1 on the season.
Men's Soccer
UB 6, Canisius 0
UB 2, St. Francis (Pa.) 3
The Bulls went 1-1 this past week to move their record to 4-4-1 on the season. On Sept. 24, UB defeated crosstown rival Canisius, 6-0. Midfielder Frank Butcher opened scoring at 10:41 when he took a pass from forward Sebastian Zawislan and put the ball into the near side of the net, giving the Bulls a 1-0 lead. Forward Brian McCallion added to the lead at 26:43 when he gathered a pass from John Shannon and fired the ball into the goal from 20 yards out.
The second half was all UB as forward Steve Butcher tallied the first of two goals at 58:30 to give the Bulls a 3-0 lead. A goal by Zawislan on a penalty kick, another by Steve Butcher and one by forward Chris Vinci made the final score UB 6, Canisius 0.
On Sept. 27, the Bulls lost a close game to St. Francis (Pa.) in overtime, 2-3. Butcher and Jarek Radzinski scored the only two goals.
Cross Country
Both teams had an impressive weekend at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. The women's team finished fourth out of 28 teams in the 5,000-meter run with a total of 139 points. Casey Spencer finished first for the Bulls and 21st overall in the meet with a time of 19:11.
The men's team placed third overall in the meet with 175 total points. Pat Nolan finished 10th overall in the 8,000-meter run with a time of 26:33 and Tony David finished with a time of 26:34 for 11th place overall.
