  • ‘Miss Representation’ to be screened

A screening of the documentary “Miss Representation,” which explores how the media’s misrepresentations of women have led to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence, will take place at 7 p.m. March 23 in the Screening Room of the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

A reception and resource fair will precede the screening at 6 p.m. in the CFA lobby; a brief panel discussion will follow the showing of the film.

The screening, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by Wellness Education Services and the Center for Student Leadership & Community Engagement.

Written, directed and produced by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, “Miss Representation” premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. It also aired on OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network in October 2011.

  • Award to support students

KeyBank has awarded a $100,000 grant to the Hauptman-Woodward Medical Research Institute (HWI) to support two KeyBank fellows in UB’s Department of Structural Biology, located at HWI.

The award will support Benjamin Orlando and Ritwik Nandigiri, both of whom are pursuing PhDs in structural biology.

“The financial contribution from KeyBank allows us the flexibility to pursue additional projects and delegate additional resources to these projects,” says Michael Malkowski, UB assistant professor of structural biology and HWI principal research scientist. “It enhances our ability to ‘think outside the box’ and carry out ‘high-risk/high-reward’ studies.”
