  • WNED to take ownership of WBFO March 1

Western New York Public Broadcasting Association and UB have announced that WBFO-FM 88.7 will become a part of the WNED family of public radio and television stations effective March 1.

Under the purchase agreement, originally signed on July 28, 2011, WNED will pay UB $4 million for the licenses to operate WBFO and two stations serving the Southern Tier: WUBJ-FM 88.1 in Jamestown and WOLN-FM 91.3 in Olean.

All three stations will retain their call letters and continue to operate on the same frequencies. The stations reach large portions of Western New York and Southern Ontario, serving approximately 90,000 listeners weekly. WNED 970 AM and WBFO will continue to retain their full NPR affiliations.

  • Music offers free concerts

UB has much in store for the budget-conscious music lover this month.

Violist Kim Kashkashian and pianist Robert Levin, who will perform a recital featuring an all-Schumann program at UB on Feb. 7, will be the guest performers at the Department of Music’s monthly Brown Bag Concert to be held at noon that day on the stage in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus.

Now in its 13th year, the Brown Bag Concert Series is designed to showcase the talents of UB music students and faculty. The series of free, informal concerts presented over the lunch hour allows patrons to catch a glimpse of the kind of programming offered on a regular basis by the Department of Music. Participants are encouraged to bring their lunch and enjoy complimentary Tim Hortons coffee. Each attendee will receive a pair of complimentary tickets for a more formal concert within the following month.

The free music events for February also will include a number of ensemble performances and student recitals:

    • MM Recital: Melanie Voytovich, percussion. 7:30 p.m., Feb. 18, Lippes Concert Hall
    • Genkin Philharmonic. 4 p.m., Feb. 27, Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus
    • MM Recital: Lana Stafford, flute. 7:30 p.m., Feb. 28, Baird Recital Hall
