The Professional Staff Senate (PSS) kicked off the fall 2011 semester with a welcome reception and lunch for staff hired during the past year.

The reception began with a meet and greet with President Satish K. Tripathi, who then spoke about the integral role staff have in helping UB 2020 succeed and in making UB a great university.

PSS senators from each of UB’s five service or academic units were on hand to answer questions and meet with approximately 35 new staff in attendance.

University Communications writer Dave Hill, who was hired in April, said the event was helpful in learning about how he can get involved with UB while networking with some of his colleagues across the campus.

“I’m still relatively new to UB, so this welcome reception was a great way to meet new people, including a few who work in my building that I have never met before. It was useful to learn a bit more about PSS and the various ways that new staff members can become involved with the group,” Hill said.

PSS Chair Ann Marie Landel noted that the event helps foster collegiality and helps create a connection for new staff members so they know where to go for information about PSS events and opportunities.

The senate’s Welcoming Committee presented a PowerPoint presentation explaining how the PSS fits into the university’s mission, covering topics like how the PSS is organized, the types of PSS committees and the work they do, as well as presenting current initiatives like the Greener Shade of Blue and You event being held next week.

“Opportunities provide growth and PSS is all about staying connected, getting involved and learning from our colleagues,” Landel said. “This reception provides the doorway to professional opportunity at UB.”
