A memorial service for Harbans S. Grover, who oversaw construction at UB for 20 years as director of architectural services, will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 20 in the Sikh Cultural Center and Gurdwara, 6569 Main St., Amherst.

Grover died last Sept. 11 in Whittier, Calif., after a long illness. He was 76.

Born in New Delhi, Grover moved to England at the age of 16 to study art and architecture. He returned to India six years later to start his own architectural firm, designing commercial buildings and homes.

In 1967, he joined an architectural firm in Ottawa, Ont., where he designed schools and hospitals before coming to Buffalo in 1969 to design commercial and institutional buildings with several firms here.

He joined the UB professional staff in 1977 as university architect and director of architectural services, overseeing design and construction on the North Campus and refurbishing of buildings on the South Campus.

He retired from UB in 1997.

Prominent in the Sikh community in Buffalo, he became the first president of the Sikh Society in 1972 and was active in the local gurdwara (Sikh place of worship) and youth programs.
