  • Buffalo Dance Festival to be held

The Buffalo Dance Festival, the third annual celebration of dance in Buffalo, will take place July 30 in the Center for the Arts, North Campus.

The festival features daytime master classes taught by such well-known artists as Joseph Cipolla of Configuration Dance Theatre, John Lehrer of LehrerDance, Bill Evans of Bill Evans Dance and special guest instructor Christina Johnson of Dance Theatre of Harlem, Complexions and Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet.

During the evening, world-class dance groups will perform, including Configuration Dance Theatre, Lehrer Dance, Bill Evans Dance and Melanie Aceto Contemporary Dance, led by UB faculty member Melanie Aceto. Students attending the Buffalo Dance Festival’s intensive five-day choreographic workshop earlier in the week also will perform.

Tickets for the evening of dance, to be held at 8 p.m. in the Mainstage theater in the CFA, are $23.50 for general admission and $18.50 for students.

Tickets are available at the CFA box office and at all Ticketmaster outlets, including Ticketmaster.com.
  • Flags at half-mast today

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo has directed that flags on state government buildings—including those at UB—be flown at half-mast on July 14 in honor of a soldier from Albany who was killed in action in Afghanistan on July 10.

Army Spc. Rafael A. Nieves Jr. died of wounds suffered when small arms fire and a rocket-propelled grenade struck his vehicle during a mounted patrol in Paktika province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment of the 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) stationed at Fort Campbell, Ky.

Cuomo has ordered that flags on all state buildings be lowered to half-mast in honor of and tribute to New York service members who are killed in action or die in a combat zone.
