David L. Dunn, vice president for health sciences, will leave UB July 1 to become executive vice president for health affairs at the University of Louisville.

Michael Cain, dean of the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, will take on the additional duties and title of vice president for health sciences.

In announcing Dunn’s resignation in an email to the university community, President Satish K. Tripathi praised Dunn for his valuable contributions over the past six years, among them his role on the Berger Commission on Health Care Facilities in the 21st Century, which identified and implemented strategies for improving the region’s health care delivery system, and his work in advancing the vision for UB’s Academic Health Center.

“David was instrumental in pursuing our vision of excellence through such contributions as new and improved research learning facilities, expansion of our clinical and translational research portfolio, unification of clinical practice plans, and hiring of several outstanding new faculty and deans,” Tripathi added.

He also praised Cain, calling his leadership and vision “instrumental to the medical school, to our health sciences organization and to the university as a whole.”

“I am grateful for his willingness to take on this expanded role.” Tripathi said. “I have greatly valued his counsel and contributions as dean and look forward to his continued contributions and collaboration in this important new capacity.”

An accomplished surgeon, scientist and administrator, Dunn was named vice president for health sciences in 2005 after serving as Jay Phillips Professor and chair of the nationally prominent Department of Surgery at the University of Minnesota and University of Minnesota Hospitals.
