David M. Engel, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in the UB Law School, received an honorary doctor of laws degree at the commencement ceremonies of Chiang Mai University, held earlier this week at the university in northern Thailand. Engel, who served in the Peace Corps in Thailand and met his wife, Jaruwan S. Engel, there, has for many years taken UB Law students to Chiang Mai during the January “bridge term” in a course called “The Legal Culture of Thailand.” The degree was conferred by Crown Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, daughter of Thailand’s King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. has named Sandra Q. Firmin, curator of the UB Art Gallery, to the Canal Side Art Selection Committee. The committee will identify an artist or group of artists who will create an iconic work of public art or set of art experiences designed to enrich the experience of visitors to the Erie Canal Side area in particular and Buffalo in general.

Danis J. Gehl, associate executive director/director of education at UB’s Educational Opportunity Center, is the recipient of a 2011 Community Leader Award in the “family” category from the National Federation for Just Communities of Western New York. She shares the award with her husband, Scott W. Gehl, executive director of Housing Opportunities Made Equal. The Gehls received the award at the federation’s annual luncheon on Jan. 20.
