The New York Upstate Chapter of the American Planning Association has awarded Robert G. Shibley, the next dean of the School of Architecture and Planning, the Michael J. Krasner Professional Planner Award. The award honors an individual for sustained contribution to the planning profession through distinguished practice, teaching or writing.

Amy Schmit, director of special projects at UB’s New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences, was named Buffalo Business First’s 2010 Athena Award Young Professional at the annual event held on Nov. 4. Laura Barnum, senior assistant vice president for resource planning and information management, also was a nominee for the award.

Howard R. Wolf, emeritus professor and senior fellow in the Department of English, has been has been awarded a MacDowell Fellowship for a three-week residency at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, N.H., in January 2011. Founded in 1907 by composer Edward MacDowell and his wife, Marian, the colony is the oldest retreat for writers, composers and visual artists in America. Among its fellows have been Willa Cather, Aaron Copeland, Leonard Bernstein, James Baldwin and Thornton Wilder. During his fellowship, Wolf will revise a collection of 12 stories he has been working on during the past decade, more than half of which have been published.

The Athena Awards are produced by Buffalo Niagara Partnership. Laura Barnum was a nominee for the 2010 Athena Award. Amy Schmit was named 2010 Athena Award Young Professional. There are 2 awards presented at the event. Congratulations to both!
