  • Katz to speak in seminar series

    Jonathan Katz, associate professor of visual studies, will kick off the Humanities Institute’s 2010-11 New Faculty Seminar Series with a lecture titled “The Sexuality of Abstraction: Agnes Martin.”

    The talk will take place at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 6 in 538 Clemens Hall, North Campus. Like all seminars in the series, the lecture is free of charge and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

    Now in its fourth year, the New Faculty Seminar Series features the work of four new colleagues in the humanities at UB, two each semester. By bringing together scholars from a variety of fields, the series is designed to initiate and encourage the development of interdisciplinary conversations. For each event, a pre-circulated paper will be posted to the website beforehand.

  • NEH official to visit UB

    Jason Rhody, senior program officer in the Office of Digital Humanities, National Endowment for the Humanities, will visit UB’s Digital Humanities Initiative next week.

    The visit is a rescheduling of a trip planned last February but cancelled due to inclement weather on the East Coast.
    Rhody will meet with UB faculty, staff and students from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 7 in 120 Clemens Hall, North Campus. Rhody will lead a discussion of the NEH’s Office of Digital Humanities, as well as a mock grant review panel. An open discussion will take place from noon to 1 p.m.

    The Digital Humanities Initiative at Buffalo (DHIB) functions as an applied think tank for the humanities and related areas. It is designed to serve as an intellectual hub for scholars involved in innovative research and instruction at the intersection of the humanities, computing and other emerging digital technologies, and to provide an environment in which faculty are encouraged to experiment and develop digital solutions to challenges in research and instruction, or to experiment with digital technologies that may lead to new applications and project challenges.

  • Body donors to be remembered

    Individuals who have donated their bodies to UB for teaching and research through the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences’ Anatomical Gift Program and have chosen to have their cremains buried in a common gravesite will be remembered during a ceremony to be held at 1:30 p.m. Oct. 7 in Skinnersville Cemetery adjacent to the North Campus.

    A non-denominational service will take place on the grounds of the cemetery adjacent to the Newman Chapel, with a reception to follow.

  • Expert to discuss GM, Lehman bankruptcies

    Corporate restructuring attorney Harvey R. Miller will discuss the General Motors and Lehman Brothers Chapter 11 cases on Oct. 14 as the sixth event in the annual Gerald S. Lippes Speaker Series.

    “Financial Failure in Bankruptcy through the Prism of Lehman Brothers and General Motors” will be the topic of the program, which will begin with a networking reception from 6-6:45 p.m. in the atrium of the Center for the Arts, North Campus. Miller’s remarks and a question-and-answer session will follow from 7-8:30 p.m. in the CFA Screening Room.

    The event, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the schools of Management and Law, in conjunction with the Upstate New York Turnaround Management Association. Reservations are required.

    Miller is a senior partner in the international law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges based in New York City. Cited by The New York Times as “probably the best-known bankruptcy lawyer in the country,” Miller has worked on the largest and most complex bankruptcy cases in the modern era, including General Motors, Lehman Brothers, Texaco, Sunbeam and Bethlehem Steel.

    The Gerald S. Lippes Speaker Series focuses on current issues and topics related to business and finance. The series is part of a larger effort to foster an integrated understanding of the worlds of business and law, and to encourage a collaborative dialogue between business and legal professionals. The series is funded through the generous support of Gerald S. Lippes.

  • UB Foundation elects trustees, directors

    The UB Foundation has elected four new trustees and three new directors, as well as re-electing several current trustees and directors. The SUNY Board of Trustees confirmed the appointments during its September meeting.

    Gary M. Bichler, Wayne S. Blank, ’66, Robert E. Denning, ’00, and Terrence M. Gilbride, ’88, were elected new trustees, and Jeremy M. Jacobs Jr., Robert G. Morris, ’61, and Keith M. Stolzenburg, ’87, ’81, were re-elected as trustees. All will serve three-year terms from July 1, 2010, through June 30, 2013.

    The UBF board also elected three new directors—Donald K. Boswell, Angelo M. Fatta and Beverly Foit-Albert, ’75—and re-elected directors Sheldon M. Berlow, Ashok G. Kaveeshwar, ’69, Jordan A. Levy, ’77, James W. McLernon, ’50, Arthur A. Russ Jr., ’67, and Marjorie E. Winkler, ’80, ’75. All will serve three-year terms from July 1, 2010, through June 30, 2013.

    Gary Bichler has more than 30 years experience in the construction industry and joined R&P Oak Hill Development, LLC, a Buffalo-based company, as owner/partner in 2006.

    Wayne S. Blank is president of Bergamot Station, Southern California’s largest art gallery complex and cultural center, as well as president of Shoshana Wayne Gallery in Palisades, Calif.

    Greg Bauer is president of Employer Services Corporation, which provides firms with outsourcing solutions in human resources, benefits and insurance, and payroll.

    Robert Denning is president and chief executive officer of Perry’s Ice Cream Company, Inc.

    Terrence Gilbride is a partner with Hodgson Russ LLP, where he leads the firm’s Higher Education Capital Project Practice Group.

    Donald Boswell is president and chief executive officer of the Western New York Public Broadcasting Association.

    Angelo M. Fatta is president of Fatta Enterprises and vice president of the Fatta Foundation Inc.

    Beverly Foit-Albert is president of Foit-Albert Associates PC.
