Jennifer Bowen has joined the Office of the President as senior adviser to President John B. Simpson, expanding her continued duties as associate vice president for human resources.

Effective immediately, Bowen will counsel and support both President Simpson and Scott Nostaja, senior vice president and chief operations officer, providing them with strategic business and legal analysis of emerging trends within higher education and of various initiatives in support of UB 2020.

Bowen was named associate vice president for human resources in March, having served as assistant vice president since 2007. She led the creation, expansion and implementation of new programs in Wellness and Work/Life Balance, revamped the Employee Assistance Program and was a key member of the Great Place to Work initiative—all of which she will continue to oversee in her new appointment.

A 1997 alumnus of the University at Buffalo Law School, Bowen worked for several Buffalo law firms before joining UB in 1999 as assistant director of employee relations. She directed the office from 2003 to 2007, when she served as the president’s designee and adviser for all campus labor and employment matters.

“Jennifer has played an instrumental leadership role in university administration throughout her service to the university’s human resources unit beginning in 1999, and has been a valued contributor to the university’s ongoing process of strategic planning and institutional transformation,” Nostaja said in an announcement to UB department managers last week.

Bowen has been active in serving UB and contributes her leadership experience to several university-wide committees. She is chair of the Great Place to Work Steering Committee, president of the UB Child Care Center Board of Directors and head of the UB Alumni Association Employee Alumni Chapter.
