Lauren Newkirk Maynard, a writer in the Office of University Communications, has received the Outstanding Service to the Professional Staff Senate Award.

The award honors a member of the professional staff who has provided outstanding service to the Professional Staff Senate as a member of the Executive Committee or as a member of a standing or ad-hoc committee or task force.

Maynard was recognized for her work on last fall’s A Greener Shade of Blue and You Day, sponsored by the PSS, UB Campus Dining and Shops and the Faculty Senate. The event provided information from more than 30 local businesses and nonprofit organizations for UB faculty and staff interested in learning how to “green” their homes and lives with environmentally responsible, energy-efficient products and lifestyle choices.

The award was presented at the PSS’ annual awards luncheon on May 12. Recipients of the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service— Mary Anne Rokitka, associate dean for biomedical undergraduate education, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and Steven L. Shaw, director of international admissions, Office of International Education—also were recognized at the luncheon.

A writer and editor in University Communications since 2006, Maynard most recently assisted in the planning, content development, design and management of the university’s award-winning campus newsletters.

She is a member of UB’s Environmental Task Force and of University Communications’ Green Team.

Before joining the UB professional staff, she served for five years as managing editor of Artvoice, Buffalo’s alternative weekly newspaper. She is a contributing writer to a number of local publications, including Buffalo Spree, Buffalo Rising and Edible Buffalo Magazine.
