A summer of science and civics

Published: April 14, 2010

The Center for Educational Collaboration offers several summer academic experiences in the sciences and civics for elementary and middle school students. CEC programs get kids excited about learning and accelerate their education so that they are a step ahead when the next school year begins.

Excelsior Scholars Program—July 12- 23 at the Buffalo Museum of Science. This intensive, two-week program will give students entering the eighth grade a hands-on combination of field and laboratory experiences to explore a scientific mystery. Instructors from the museum and UB graduate students will lead students in research that focuses on the microbe Wolbachia and includes field trips to Tifft Nature Preserve and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.

The program was developed in 2008 to give high-achieving students an intensive academic enrichment experience with exposure to college preparatory coursework in science and local career options in the sciences.

The Excelsior Scholars Program is funded by a $10,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation and with additional support from New York State and the Buffalo Public Schools. Tuition is $250 and includes lunch and all materials.

Passport STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math)—Aug. 2 -5 in Allen Hall on the South Campus. This program introduces 10-14-year-olds to career paths in science, technology, engineering and math. Each day of the camp focuses on a different field and includes lots of hands-on activities and information sessions with local companies. Tuition is $100.

New: Innovation Station—July 26 -30 on the North Campus. This program for 8-12-year-olds is led by UB electrical engineering faculty and graduate students. Participants will learn about key concepts in electrical engineering with a specific focus on photonics—the science of light. Tuition is $125.

New: The Scrapbook Project: Our City of Lights—July 19-23 on the South Campus and Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo. This program will teach 9-11-year-olds about Buffalo’s history, architecture and famous “firsts.” Activities are designed around historic figures interred at the cemetery; campers will photograph architectural styles in Forest Lawn to help them design their own structures and document the week in a final scrapbook project. Campers also will tour the South Campus to learn more about its schools and related careers. Tuition is $125.

New: Wiggle Your Power—July 14-18 in Allen Hall on the South Campus. Wiggle Your Power will teach 8-10-year-olds about civic engagement and how to develop their talents through team-building activities. Participants will learn about community needs through site visits and service, and decide how to use a portion of their registration fees to give back to their communities. Tuition is $125 ($25 is donated to a non-profit agency).
