Huefner to receive NYSSCPA Distinguished Service Award
Ronald J. Huefner, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor in the School of Management, has been named the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award by the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA).
The award recognizes outstanding leadership services to the profession through publications, public service and other activities. It will be presented to Huefner on May 13 at the society’s 113th Annual Election Meeting and Dinner at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel.
Huefner will receive the award for the leadership he has shown to the NYSSCPA as a vice president, member of its board of directors and executive committee, and for his high commitment to CPA education through his service as chair, vice chair and current member of its Higher Education Committee; chair and vice chair of its Scholarship Awards Committee; and as a trustee of its Foundation for Accounting Education.
He also is the 1994 recipient of the NYSSCPA Emanuel Saxe Outstanding CPA in Education Award, an award that highlights outstanding service and professional development in accounting education, and the Haskins Award for CPA exam performance in 1970.
A member of NYSSCPA since 1971, Huefner chaired its Strategic Planning Task Force and Task Force on Chapters. He also twice served as a member of its Nominating Committee and as a member of its Development of the Profession Oversight Committee and Real Estate Task Force.
He was president, president-elect, vice president and secretary of its Buffalo chapter. He received the Max Block Distinguished Article Award in 1999 for his contribution to The CPA Journal, a peer-reviewed technical publication aimed at public and private accounting practitioners, managers, educators and other financial professionals, and serves on its editorial board.
A member of the UB faculty for 42 years, Huefner has mentored doctoral students since the early 1970s and served as chair and as a member of School of Management’s MBA Program Committee for the past 10 years.
He has authored or co-authored 22 books on accounting and taxation, and is a national speaker on these issues. He has been a reviewer for 17 accounting and financial journals and currently is a member of the editorial board of The CPA Journal and the Journal of Theoretical Accounting Research.
He serves his community as member and past chair of the finance committee of Sacred Heart Parish in Bowmansville. He has been a member of its parish council and a member of the board of trustees of St. Mary’s High School in Lancaster. He also has served as a volunteer consultant to the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra.
Huefner holds a doctorate and an MBA from Cornell University and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Canisius College.
