The search for a dean for the School of Architecture and Planning is under way with the appointment of a search committee comprised of members of the architecture faculty, faculty members from academic units that regularly collaborate with architecture faculty, and members of the Western New York architecture community.

The search is seeking a successor to Brian Carter, who announced on Jan. 28 that he is stepping down as dean after more than seven years in the post to devote more time to design research and practice as a member of the school’s faculty. Carter will remain dean until July 1.

Arjang Assad, professor and dean of the School of Management, has been appointed chair of the search committee by Provost Satish K. Tripathi.

Other members of the committee are Christina Akers, an alumna of the School of Architecture and Planning; Robert Burkard, professor and chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Science, School of Public Health and Health Professions; Michael C. Constantinou, professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; Michael Farrell, professor in the Department of Sociology, College of Arts and Sciences; Kelly Hayes McAlonie, associate vice president, Cannon Design, and former president of the Western New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects Buffalo; and Susan Mangold, professor, UB Law School.

UB architecture school faculty members on the committee are Sergio López-Piñeiro, assistant professor, Department of Architecture; William McDonnell, associate dean; Al Price, associate professor, Department of Urban and Regional Planning; Samina Raja, associate professor, Department of Urban and Regional Planning; Edward Steinfeld, professor, Department of Architecture; Ernest Sternberg, professor, Department of Urban and Regional Planning; and Despina Stratigakos, assistant professor, Department of Architecture.

The search committee will communicate information on the search and report its progress through the search Web site.
