  • My favorite comfort foods at this time of the year would have to be my homemade chicken potpie and shepherd’s pie. I also love my family’s recipe for chowder, which we make at an annual chowder party in the fall and freeze it to enjoy during the winter. I still like to grill outdoors, but the oven and stove definitely get a workout during these winter months.

  • Pizza, spaghetti, chili, and I’m really hooked on black beans. I make them with spinach, rice—whatever I have around. And right now, I make everything with lots of hot peppers. I didn’t always like the heat, but now I go through jars of peppers and even eat them raw. I guess my tastes are changing.

  • I love black bean soup in the winter! I found a great recipe using extra-firm tofu instead of ground beef in Wegmans’ monthly magazine, and I made a large batch this Christmas to share with my son, who lives in Dallas. I sent him back to Texas with some of the soup, along with tips on how to “doctor” it, as my mother used to say.
