The UB Department of Music has teamed up with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center in its production of this year’s Slee/Beethoven String Quartet Cycle, UB’s annual presentation of Beethoven’s repertoire of string quartet music.

The two organizations this year will present their concerts in the Beethoven cycle on similar schedules—during the winter months, instead of over the entire academic year as UB has done in the past. In addition, the Chamber Music Society’s cycle will follow the order of UB concerts, while UB has engaged ensembles associated with the society.

UB’s 2010 cycle will open on Jan. 22 with a performance by the Brentano String Quartet. The concert, and all other concerts in the cycle, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall, North Campus. The quartet will perform Beethoven’s Quartet in E-Flat Major, Op. 127; Quartet in F Major, Op. 18, No 1; and Quartet in C Major, Op. 59, No. 3.

The ensemble also will conduct a master class at 10 a.m. the following day in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus. The class is free and open to the public.

The remainder of the schedule:

• Concert Two: Jan. 25, Daedalus Quartet. The quartet will perform Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 74 (“The Harp”); Quartet in G Major, Op. 18, No. 2; and Quartet in C-Sharp minor, Op. 131.

• Concert Three: Jan. 26, The Borromeo String Quartet. The quartet will perform Quartet in D Major, Op. 18, No. 3; “Grosse Fuge,” Op. 133; and Quartet in F Major, Op. 59, No. 1.

• Concert Four: Feb. 18, The Pacifica Quartet. The ensemble, which will conduct an open master class earlier that day at 3:30 p.m. in Baird Recital Hall, will perform Quartet in F minor, Op. 95 (“Serioso”); Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 18, No. 6; and Quartet in A minor, Op. 132.

• Concert Five: Feb. 23, Penderecki Quartet. The quartet will perform Quartet in A Major, Op. 18, No. 5; and Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 130.

• Concert Six: Feb. 25, Miró Quartet. The group will present Quartet in C minor, Op. 18, No. 4; Quartet in F Major, Op. 135; and Quartet in E minor, Op. 59, No. 2.

Advance tickets for the concerts are $12 for general admission; $9 for UB faculty/staff/alumni and senior citizens; and $5 for students. Tickets at the door are $20, $15 and $8.

Tickets to all Department of Music concerts are available at the Slee Hall box office, at the Center for the Arts box office and at all Ticketmaster outlets, including Ticketmaster.com.
