Classes don’t start until next week, but the new school year is already upon us. Today is the official move-in date for freshmen living in residence halls. Many transfer and international students have already moved in. To help newcomers get acquainted with the campus and make new friends, UB is hosting a variety of events.

The Opening Weekend schedule includes ice cream socials this evening where students can meet their fellow dormitory dwellers and residence life staff, and where parents can meet UB staff.

On Friday morning, students will have the opportunity to attend a welcome fair where they will be able to set up bank and cell phone accounts and ask university representatives questions about UB resources, campus jobs and other topics. In the afternoon, students will be able to participate and watch as a mass of students merges to form the UB logo—the fifth annual “Human UB.” Besides fostering school pride, the event will serve as a reminder of the university’s commitment to protecting the environment. Andrea Costantino, director of student life, says the first 1,000 students present will receive T-shirts emblazoned with the words, “How will UB Green?”

Later in the day, at 4:30 p.m., President John B. Simpson will speak to students and their families, sharing his vision for UB’s future at the University Welcome Ceremony at 4:30 p.m. at the Center for the Arts Mainstage Theatre on North Campus. A chicken barbecue and concert featuring Mayday at Baird Point will follow the address, giving students and parents a chance to meet with faculty, staff and other students.

On Saturday, students can shop at the University Community Farmers Market located on the South Campus and take UB bike or walking tours. In the afternoon, they will be able to choose from bus tours that ferry them to locations including Niagara Falls, Niagara Factory Outlet Mall or sites around Buffalo. The day will end with the Welcome Back Bash, where students can enjoy free music, food and dancing.

Sunday’s activities will include an opportunity for students who commute to meet one another and talk to staff about campus services and how they can make UB feel like home. A movie night and late-night pancake “breakfast” will cap off a whirlwind weekend.
