Lineup set for summer lecture series

  • An upgrades to CCR will realize significant energy savings while boosting the center's total capacity.

“Innovation and Discovery: UB at the Cutting Edge” will the theme of the 2009 UBThisSummer Lecture Series, the annual summer series showcasing prominent UB faculty members.

The lectures will be held at 4 p.m. on Wednesdays, beginning June 10, in 225 Natural Sciences Complex, North Campus. There will be no lecture on July 1.

The lineup this year features a variety of timely topics, among them human behavior, the environment, architecture and the economy.

The schedule:

• June 10: “Personalized Medicine and Pharmacogenomics: Discovering New Genetic Methods to Link Diagnosis and Drug Treatment,” Gene D. Morse, professor, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

• June 17: “Please State the Nature of the Medical Emergency: How Computers Understand Conversation,” Werner Ceusters, professor, Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and director, Ontology Research Group, UB’s New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences.

• June 24: “Drugs and Bugs: Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products in the Environment,” James N. Jensen, professor, Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

• July 8: “Design Matters,” Brian Carter, professor and dean, School of Architecture and Planning.

• July 15: “The Global Economic Meltdown and Its Challenges to Colleges,” D. Bruce Johnstone, SUNY Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Higher and Comparative Education, director of the International Comparative Higher Education Finance and Accessibility Project, and former SUNY chancellor.

• July 22: “Alternative Fuels Alternatives,” Carl Lund, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, SEAS.

• July 29: “Investing in Worksite Wellness Programs: What are the Health and Fiscal Benefits for Small Companies and Those with Limited Resources”? Joan Dorn, associate professor, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, and interim chair, Department of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, School of Public Health and Health Professions.

• Aug. 5: “Lying to Me: Deception Myths and Realities,” Mark Frank, associate professor, Department of Communication, College of Arts and Sciences, and director, Communication Science Center.
