Recognizing exceptional researchers, innovative teachers

UB recently recognized exceptional researchers and teachers at a reception held in the Kaveeshwar Gallery on the fifth floor of Capen Hall.

The reception, hosted by President John B. Simpson and Provost Satish K. Tripathi, honored the recipients of the 2008 and 2009 Exceptional Scholars and Teaching Innovation awards

The Exceptional Scholars Award honors faculty members for their outstanding research performance at different stages of their careers. There are two awards: Sustained Achievement Awards for senior scholars and Young Investigator Awards for untenured scholars who received their terminal degree within the past eight years. Both awards recognize work that has “garnered public and /or professional accolades beyond the norm.”

Recipients of Sustained Achievement Awards for 2008 are Jonathan Bird, Department of Electrical Engineering, and Rakesh Nagi, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, both in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; Richard Bankert, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, and Sanjay Sethi, Department of Medicine, both in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Receiving the 2009 Sustained Achievement Award are Richard Ellis, Department of History, College of Arts and Sciences; Stelios Andreadis, Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, SEAS; and Jean Wactawski-Wende, Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, School of Public Health and Health Professions.

Recipients of Young Investigator Awards for 2008 are Gilberto Mosqueda, Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering, SEAS; Darren Treadway, Department of Organization and Human Resources, School of Management; Sarah Salvy, Department of Pediatrics, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences; and Brian Tsuji, Department of Pharmacy Practice, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Receiving the 2009 Young Investigator Award are Hao Zeng, Department of Physics, CAS; Gregory Fabiano, Department of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology, Graduate School of Education; Yong-Kyu Yoon, Department of Electrical Engineering; and Mary Ann Meeker, School of Nursing.

Teaching Innovation Awards recognize outstanding achievement in teaching innovation that may include, but are not limited to, innovative uses of educational technology.

Receiving awards are Yvonne Scherer, School of Nursing (2008); Robert Wahler, Department of Pharmacy Practice (2008); Randy Yerrick, Department of Learning and Instruction, GSE (2009); Mark Bartholomew, Law School (2009); and Joseph Salamone, Department of Organization and Human Resources (2009).
