An article on the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) authored by Claude E. Welch Jr., SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in the Department of Political Science, at the invitation of the U.S. Department of State was published in eJournal USA, an online publication of the state department. The article, “Sixty Years: Celebrating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,” has been translated into French, Spanish, Russian and Persian.

Steven J. Fliesler, professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Ophthalmology, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, has been elected a Silver Fellow of ARVO, the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, in recognition of his individual accomplishments, leadership and contributions to the association. ARVO is the leading professional organization for eye research. Fellows will be inducted at ARVO’s annual meeting, being held in May in Fort Lauderdale.

Frank T. Schimpfhauser, assistant dean for educational evaluation and research in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, was an invited speaker at the Medical Education for the 21st Century Conference, held recently in Havana. Schimpfhauser spoke on “Globalization of Medical Education Utilizing a U.S. Model Database/U.S. Students Perception of Globalized Medicine.” He and colleagues from the Association of American Medical Colleges described their experiences with students and faculty in implementing a national password-protected online database for assessing and evaluating medical school curriculum. The conference, organized by the International Association for Health Policy and the Latin American Association for Social Medicine, was co-sponsored by the World Health Organization, the Pan American Health Organization and the Ministry of Public Health in Cuba.
