Word of Mouth

What’s your best winter driving tip?

Send your response to ub-word-of-mouth@buffalo.edu and we’ll publish the responses we receive in the next online UB Reporter.

  • Slow down. Remember that the exit ramps get plowed after the highways. I was hit once, head-on, by a person who forgot that. Also, remember that the first major snowstorm of the year is the most dangerous in terms of accidents. Be especially careful then.

  • Turn into the skid. But when you can’t, avoid delays. Call AAA as soon as you leave home. When the tow truck winches you out of a snowbank, remember, they hook that thing to your car frame so don’t try to drive away until they remove it. They hate that.

  • That would be a tie. If it’s really bad, I would go with Jimmy Griffin’s advice to “stay home with a six-pack.” But if you have to go out, remember to steer into the skid to get control back.

Readers weigh in on last week’s question.

If you could take any class at UB, what would it be?

It’s difficult to choose, but right now I would take CPM 252, Community Resources: Buffalo Moving Forward. It’s completely different from any class I’ve ever seen and I’m interested in learning how to make my local community an even better place to live.

If I could take any class, it would either be interior design or horticulture—two things I have a new interest in and know very little about.
