Word of Mouth

What’s the best dining spot on campus?

Send your response to ub-word-of-mouth@buffalo.edu and we’ll publish the responses we receive in next week’s online UB Reporter.

  • It’s a toss-up between Pistachio’s on the North Campus and the Greenery in Harriman Hall on the South Campus. Pistachio’s is a bit larger, but the Greenery has a wonderful intimacy, and this year they both debuted fabulous new menus!

  • The Greenery is the best dining spot on the South Campus. The atmosphere is relaxing, the food is good and the staff makes it a pleasurable experience.

  • It depends. If I have visitors—faculty candidates, potential applicants, company representatives—I go to the Tiffin Room in the Student Union. The service is good and the quality of the food is decent. For more fun, I walk over to the Commons and get inexpensive Indian, Korean or Chinese food. For about $6, you can get a plateful of goodies. Later, I’ll get a cup of cappuccino from Starbucks and watch as anyone and everyone on the campus walks by. Now and then, I even see former President Greiner at Starbucks.

What do you do to relieve stress?

I have the flexibility within my school to take an exercise class on campus during my lunch hour three times a week. It is economical and fits into my busy schedule, plus it gives me that “second wind” to finish the day!

Aside from doing some type of physical activity, there is no better stress reliever for me than to talk to a friend at work. I don’t need to talk about the stressor, but the simple distraction of a friendly chat and a giggle usually puts my stress into perspective so that I can get back to business.

In the payroll unit, we relieve stress by laughing with each other over the “unique” situations we always end up running into. It helps to take a breather and chat with co-workers for a few minutes before getting back to business.

I like to keep a supply of chocolate handy and I also like to take a little break to laugh with co-workers.

Quite often I leave my work area to relieve stress. Just walking away from things for a few minutes helps me calm down and get a second wind. In addition, it’s nice to talk with a friendly co-worker for a few minutes—about things that are not work related—and then I’m able to go forward with the rest of my workday.

I find it calming to cook a nice meal after a stressful day. Something about chopping vegetables and creating something comforting to eat is relaxing to me. I also enjoy watching mindless television at night. My husband calls me a “reality TV junkie” but I only watch it because it takes my mind off serious things and makes me laugh.

To relieve stress on those hectic payroll weeks, we bring in lots of food—some is even healthy—and we just laugh and try to have fun. Sometimes our unit will go out to dinner or to a show and enjoy each other’s company outside of work.

I like to read a good book during breaks and lunch. It takes me away to exciting places and people.

I like to do some type of physical activity. Running is usually my activity of choice, but yard word work is a good option as well. The more stress I have, the faster I run or work.

I surround myself with the funniest people I know. I’m lucky to work with some pretty hilarious people. We crack each other up and constantly make each other laugh during the workday.

There is such a strong connection, proven by research, between body and mind. While at work, I’ll get out and do a mile walk—hopefully dragging some poor unsuspecting co-worker with me and watching them feel better fast! Any aerobic exercise gets the blood flowing, which transports blood and oxygen to the brain. We then see great improvements in concentration, focus and general well being! What supervisor wouldn’t want their employees to experience that?

Deborah A. Hard
EAP Administrator

If I’m feeling stressed at work I go out for lunch! I’ll take advantage of the many food establishments both on and off campus. Stepping away from my desk and enjoying a change of scenery never fails to bring about a change of mindset as well.

When my office was on the South Campus, many of us would walk over to Tim Hortons and grab a cup of joe. Tim Hortons made a lot of money off us!
