Toomey appointed director of admissions

Regina S. Toomey has been appointed director of admissions and interim assistant vice president for student affairs, Provost Thomas E. Headrick has announced.

Toomey, who has served in an interim capacity in both posts since November 1996 and prior to that as associate director of admissions from 1983-96, has been a member of the UB staff since 1977.

She holds a master's degree in college counseling and student personnel and a bachelor's degree in French, both from UB.



Linda Yalem Run set for Sept. 28

More than 1,600 runners, joggers, racewalkers and strollers are expected to participate in the eighth annual Linda Yalem Memorial Run, to be held Sept. 28 on the North Campus.

The 5-K, U.S.A. Track and Field-certified event, which will begin at 10 a.m. near Alumni Arena, is held in memory of Linda Yalem, a UB student who was assaulted and murdered while running near campus, and to promote safety awareness programs on campus. Yalem was training for the New York City Marathon at the time of her death.

Advance registrationÑpostmarked by Sept. 23 or in-person from 4-7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, in Alumni ArenaÑis $13, general public and $10, UB students. Race-day registration, from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in Alumni Arena, is $16. For more information, call 645-3141.



Newman named Executive of Year

Reginald B. Newman II, president of NOCO Energy Corp. of Buffalo, has been named 1997 "Niagara Frontier Executive of the Year" by the School of Management.

The award will be presented at the 48th annual UB School of Management Alumni Association Awards Banquet on Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Hyatt Regency Buffalo.

Chair of the board of trustees of the UB Foundation, Inc., Newman has been a member of its board since 1989. He also has been affiliated with the Greater Buffalo Partnership, Millard Fillmore Health System and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

A graduate of Northwestern University and a native of Western New York, Newman joined NOCO in 1960.



Adams to edit series for library unit

Judith Adams, director of Lockwood Library, has been appointed editor of the Library Administration and Management Association (LAMA) Occasional Paper Series for 1997-99. LAMA is a division of the American Library Association.

The Occasional Paper Series includes papers on topics related to the managerial aspects of librarianship, such as facility planning and management, personnel, public relations, fiscal planning and management, middle management and statistics in all types of libraries.

Adams is president of the SUNY Librarians Association and a member of the American Library Association, LAMA and the Association of College Research Libraries.



Fitzer assistant director of ESL Program

John K. Fitzer has been appointed assistant director of the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program in the English Language Institute (ELI). Prior to his appointment, Fitzer was assistant director for academic support services at the ELI, responsible for administering the ELI Evening Program.

Fitzer holds an M.Ed. in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and an M.B.A., both from UB.

In his new position, he is responsible for the administration of the ESL Program, as well as the SPEAK Testing Program. His office is in 317-319 Baldy Hall and he can be contacted at 645-2077.



Newman Award to be presented

The Annual Newman Convocation and Liturgy of the Holy Spirit will be held at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, in St. Joseph's University Church, 3269 Main St., adjacent to the South Campus.

At the service, the recipient of the Newman Award, which recognizes an individual whose efforts have helped to build a greater sense of community at UB, will be announced.

The service is open to the university community.
