The University at Buffalo celebrates graduates through commencement ceremonies and university-wide recognition events held annually. Participation in commencement is optional and separate from the awarding of your degree. Applying for graduation does not automatically register you for a commencement ceremony, and students who wish to participate must complete both processes.
UB Students at SIM
A dedicated UB-SIM Commencement Ceremony is held annually in Singapore in July. Eligible graduates will receive information about the ceremony and registration process through their SIM Connect portal. Please check your SIM Connect in late spring for your commencement invitation and registration details.
UB Bound Students
Commencement ceremonies are organized by UB's schools and colleges and provide graduates the opportunity to celebrate their achievements with family, friends, faculty, and fellow classmates. Details regarding ceremony dates, registration, tickets, regalia, livestreaming, and other commencement-related information are published on the official UB Commencement website.
Important Reminder: Participation in a commencement ceremony does not constitute the official awarding of a degree. Degrees are awarded only after all academic requirements have been successfully completed and certified by the university. The official degree conferral date—not the commencement ceremony date—appears on your diploma and transcript.
For the most current information for UB commencement, visit:
Degree Conferral is the official awarding of your University at Buffalo degree and determines the date shown on your diploma and transcript.
Commencement is the ceremony recognizing your achievement and may occur on a different date. Participation in commencement does not guarantee degree conferral. All degree requirements must be completed and certified before a degree is awarded.
Students who successfully complete all degree requirements will receive a degree awarded by the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York (SUNY). Your diploma and academic records will reflect the official University at Buffalo degree title and major as approved by the university.
Please note that graduation ceremonies and degree conferral are separate processes. Participation in a commencement ceremony does not constitute the official awarding of a degree. Degrees are formally conferred after all academic requirements have been verified and certified.
| Term Completed | Official Degree Conferral Date |
| Spring | June 1 |
| Summer | August 31 |
| Fall | February 1 |
The official degree award date that appears on your diploma and transcript is based on the term in which your degree is conferred.
Your diploma will display the official degree conferral date, not the date of your commencement ceremony.
Graduation is not the end of your relationship with UB—it is the beginning of your lifelong connection to a global alumni community of more than 300,000 graduates worldwide. UB's alumni network provides opportunities for professional networking, lifelong learning, mentorship, volunteer engagement, and social events.
We encourage all graduating students to register and update their information with the UB Office of Alumni Engagement:
The Future Alumni Network (UB FAN) helps students and recent graduates build connections with fellow Bulls, alumni mentors, and professional networks.
Stay connected to our traditions, informed of the latest university news and in the loop on upcoming events.
Graduates living in Singapore are encouraged to become active members of the UB Singapore alumni community. The network hosts professional, social, educational, and networking events throughout the year and provides opportunities to stay engaged with fellow UB graduates in the region.
If you relocate after graduation, UB also maintains alumni networks in many countries and regions around the world, including Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, and others.
Moving to the United States after graduation? UB's Regional Alumni Networks provide opportunities to connect with fellow Bulls through professional networking, social events, and community engagement activities across major cities and regions throughout the country.
