About

The Office of International Education (OIE) is the central administrative office responsible for the university’s international education services and programs. Reporting to the Provost, Professor Nojin Kwak, Vice Provost for International Education, is the university's chief international officer, responsible for International Student and Scholar Services, UB Immigration Services, Study Abroad Programs, Exchange Programs, and Overseas Sponsored Programs. As the office responsible for globalizing the university, the Office of International Education works with the provost's office and the academic units to internationalize the curriculum, develop international studies and programs, and facilitate and promote international education and research opportunities both on campus and overseas.

    Nojin Kwak, Ph.D., joined the University at Buffalo in August of 2021 as vice provost for international education and professor in the Department of Communication. As vice provost for international education, Dr. Kwak serves as UB’s senior international officer, responsible for leading central international research and academic programs and services, and for working with UB stakeholders and partners around the world to advance the university’s mission. Dr. Kwak oversees all student services for international students; study abroad and exchange programs; overseas academic programs and partnerships; immigration services for foreign-national employees and for visiting scholars from overseas; UB-SIM campus in Singapore. He liaises with overseas partner institutions, international delegations, international education organizations, and federal agencies involved in global education and exchange. Additionally, he partners with deans and faculty members to support the internationalization of university curricula, the growth of international research, and the expansion of education abroad opportunities.

    The Council on International Studies and Programs (CISP) is a distinctive feature in UB's governance of international education. Serving as a consultative body advising the provost on international studies and programs, the Council includes ex-officio members from the Office of International Education and 30 faculty from a wide range of disciplines who are involved in international activities at the university.
