Dr. Gene Morse was invited to present a summary of a new textbook to the Medical Sciences Teaching and Research Faculty at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus.

The textbook, titled Pharmacognosy: Fundamentals, Applications and Strategy, is edited by two faculty in the Department of Basic Medical Sciences at the University of the West Indies Mona Campus, Professor Rupika Delgoda and Professor Simone Badal. The textbook is a new and comprehensive resource for students and faculty interested in learning more about Pharmacognosy. The American Society of Pharmacognosy defines pharmacognosy as the study of the physical, chemical, biochemical and biological properties of drugs, drug substances or potential drugs or drug substances of natural origin as well as the search for new drugs from natural sources. This new text differs from other Pharmacognosy textbooks in that it provides:

•       More comprehensive background for reader in many areas

•       More comprehensive non-plant sources of medicines

•       More comprehensive insight provided into geographic aspects of traditional medicine and diet/nutrition

•       Extensive discussion of multidisciplinary aspects of future natural products discovery and development.

This textbook focuses on plants, natural products and their pharmacological application.
