BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Joseph A. Gardella, Jr., Ph.D., UB professor of chemistry, has been named associate dean for external affairs for the university's College of Arts and Sciences.
As associate dean, Gardella will be the "point person" for establishing and maintaining relationships between the college and industry, the community and government. He also will be involved in junior-faculty mentoring and internship issues.
A member of the UB faculty since 1982, Gardella conducts research that focuses on the solution of molecular and macromolecular structure at surfaces and interfaces, an area that encompasses many aspects of physics, chemistry, materials and engineering.
He has received several academic honors, including a SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, a National Science Foundation Award for Special Creativity and an Exxon Educational Foundation Research and Training Program Grant. He also has been named a fellow of the Lawrence M. Gelb Foundation by the Bristol Myers Corp. and the American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry.
Gardella, who has published extensively in his research areas, is on the editorial boards for several scientific journals and twice has been a featured guest on the National Public Radio show "Talk of the Nation Science Friday" with host Ira Flatow.
He is former chair of the UB Environmental Task Force.
A Buffalo resident, Gardella's community and public-service activities include an appointment by Buffalo Mayor Anthony Masiello to the city's Solid Waste Advisory Board. He also is co-president of Buffalo Public School 84 Erie County Health Care Center and an ad-hoc member of the Buffalo Board of Education Environmental Advisory Council.
