National Black Law Students Association to Hold Convention

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Nationally known attorney Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr., will be a featured speaker at the 30th Northeast Regional Convention of the National Black Law Students Association, to be held Feb. 5-8 in the Buffalo Hilton.

The Black Law Students Association at the University at Buffalo School of Law is the host chapter for the conference.

Cochran, who successfully defended O.J. Simpson against criminal that he murdered his ex-wife and her friend, will speak at the Frederick Douglass Luncheon, to be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6. The luncheon is open to the public at a cost of $30 per person.

• The Hon. Rose H. Sconiers, New York State Supreme Court, Eighth Judicial District, will deliver the conference's keynote address at a dinner to be held from 8 p.m. to midnight on Thursday, Feb. 5. The cost is $25 per person.

• The Hon. Cornelius Blackshear of U.S. Bankruptcy Court will speak at a dinner to be held from 7:30-10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 6. The cost is $30 per person.

• The Hon. Theodore Shaw, associate director of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, Inc., will speak at the Nelson Mandela Dinner & Award Banquet, to be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7. The cost is $35 per person;

Other distinguished legal professionals scheduled to address the convention include Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson; Soffiyah Elijah, a professor at City University of New York School of Law; Barbara Flatts, New York State assistant attorney general in charge of the Harlem Office; the Hon. Samuel L. Green, New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, 4th Department; the Hon. George Bundy Smith, New York State Court of Appeals, and Tina Stanford, an Erie County assistant district attorney.

The National Black Law Students Association is an organization comprised of more than 210 chapters at American law schools whose goals are the furtherance of the education, development and growth of African-American law students.
