Richelle Allen-King

Professor
Geology
richelle@buffalo.edu

Education:

  • PhD, Earth Sciences, University of Waterloo, 1991
  • BA, Chemistry, UC San Diego, 1983

Professional experience:

  • Professor, former Dept. Chair, Geosciences, University at Buffalo
  • Assistant to Associate Professor, Geology, Washington State University

What mentoring means to me:

I was the recipient of much "just in time" mentoring which I very much appreciate; generous colleagues (mostly men from outside my institution) provided key insights exactly when they were needed and by what seemed like a happy accident. If I can provide insight to others, I'd be more than pleased.

Topics I am willing to discuss with students:

Academic Culture

  • Decoding and demystifying academic culture and norms.

Other Topics

  • My parents attended two-year college (or community college). While I am not first year to college, my family could not provide insights on academic culture and it often felt like I was first generation to college.

Personal Experiences

  • Experiences related to being a woman.

I was the only woman in my department in my first faculty position. At UB, I was the second woman hired and the first woman tenured in my department, and we helped transform the department to achieve parity well ahead of R1 geology departments across the country.
