What mentoring means to me:

I view mentoring as an organic relationship that grows and is maintained based on what both people contribute to it. Although networking can certainly be an important component of mentoring, I don't see it as the primary purpose for establishing a mentoring relationship. Instead, I would hope that a mentor, as a more seasoned professional, serves as a personal resource that can offer a (hopefully) helpful perspective regarding challenges, questions, or professional paths that a mentee might be facing or considering.

Topics I am willing to discuss with students:

Academic Culture

  • Considering a non-academic path after grad school.
  • Uncertainty about staying in grad school.

Other Topics

  • I am interested in how issues involving race, gender, and social class impact a person's educational experience both inside and outside of the classroom. On a less academic note, I would be happy to discuss issues like work/life balance and the importance of maintaining personal and professional integrity in and beyond graduate school.

Personal Experiences

  • Caregiving for children.
  • Experiences related to racial, ethnic, cultural and/or religious minority status.
