Eligibility

Nominee must

  • Hold rank of tenured professor,
  • Have achieved national or international prominence, and
  • Have established a distinguished reputation as an intellectual/creative leader in their discipline.

Allocation

The Office of Faculty Affairs will communicate with each academic unit the number of nominations that unit may submit for consideration. This number is calculated based on total number of faculy and that unit's current total number of UB Distinguished ranks.

Designation

UB DP is an award, not a rank, and is a recognition that is held for a maximum period of seven years (effective 2025). Faculty may be awarded the UB Distinguished recognition only once.

Recognition timeline for faculty who have been recognized as UB Distinguished Professors:

Submission Requirements

Dossiers must include all items in the following order:

  • Dean's letter of support.
  • Chair's letter of support.
  • Candidate's current CV.
  • ePTF noting UB Distinguished Professor effective Sept. 1 of the following academic year (i.e., March 2026 submission will have an ePTF with a Sept. 1, 2026 effective date).
  • External letters.
    • Four minimum from prominent disinterested evaluators.
  • Biosketches (not full CVs) required for external evaluators.

Nomination Process

  • Nomination process is confidential (candidate should not be aware).
  • Self-nominations are not permitted.

PDF nomination submitted via UBbox with email notification to facultyaffairs@buffalo.edu and one hard copy mailed/delivered to the Office of Faculty Affairs.
